Villa marketers is who is hosting our site...and they are the ones who told us...however they did not tell us anything specific. Should they be providing the protection?

It sure sounds like it yes. Unless they are just the developers, and then they hand the finished product (your website) to a hosting service (like GoDaddy, etc.) of your choice (are theirs?).
I think it's in their area to inform you of the options, for sure.
